Moluscum Contagiosum & Moluscum Stangiosus: Comfrey ointment has been very successful in healing my daughter's rash. I also recommended it several others. (G.W.)
Thanks for the Comfrey Ointment, it definitely helped my daughter. (PW )
Joseph had a sudden outbreak of molluscum contagiosum about a month ago. There were lesions on his knees, lower legs, feet, forearms, and elbows. The lesions on the knees and elbows were so numerous that they formed plaques in places. The lesions and the surrounding skin itched miserably.
Joe's pediatrician said it was the most dramatic case of molluscum he had ever seen in his 30+ year practice. He referred Joe to a dermatologist, who said that the only proven treatments were mechanical - removal by freezing, cantharides, etc. Obviously, this was not a realistic option with hundreds of lesions.
The dermatologist also suggested we try a new pharmaceutical product which appeared promising for molluscum - Aldara (imiquimod). The price - over $1,000.00 US per ounce and not covered by our health care plan - was shocking; but Joe was so uncomfortable that we decided we would give it a try. We bought 12 packets, each containing 0.3 gram of the cream, for $116.
About the same time, I found your web site and the various parents' testimonials about comfrey. I purchased a 2-ounce jar of comfrey ointment. Joe and I decided we would go about the comparison carefully - that we would get some direct information about each preparation by using Aldara on his elbows and arms, and comfrey on his legs, knees and feet.
After two weeks, he is free of itching in all areas. However, he has had only moderate lessening of the number of lesions on his arms and elbows, where we have treated with Aldara at the prescribed interval.
His knees, legs and feet are an entirely different matter. The lesions have almost completely disappeared!
Rest assure we will waste no more money on Aldara. I plan to tell everyone I know about comfrey. What a blessing for our little son to rid himself of this miserable, itchy rash! Thank you, again.

The FDA is requiring all the herb companies put a warning label on any product that has comfrey in it. The label says the following:
Warning: External use only. Consuming this product can cause serious liver damage. This product contains Comfrey. Comfrey contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which may cause serious illness or death. This product should not be taken orally, used as a suppository, or applied to broken skin. For futher information contact the FDA at http://www.cfsan.fda.gov
It is true that there are pyrrolizidine alkaloids in comfrey. Dr. Christopher taught and believed that herbs should be used in their entirety. He believed that the body is able to deal with small amounts of toxins in the herbs when the whole herb is used. Whole herbs are used in the formulas. No research was done by the FDA concerning the use of whole herbs - only that pyrrolizidine alkaloids alone cause liver damage.
